Background of the Study
Team-based learning (TBL) is a pedagogical strategy that emphasizes collaborative learning, where individuals work together in teams to solve problems and make decisions. In healthcare, particularly in emergency nursing, clinical decision-making is a vital skill. Nurses must quickly assess patient conditions, make critical decisions regarding treatment, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Studies have shown that TBL can enhance critical thinking, teamwork, and decision-making skills, making it a promising approach in nursing education (Ogunleye & Abiola, 2023).
Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) is a major medical facility that provides healthcare services to the people of Port Harcourt and surrounding areas. The hospital's emergency department is known for its high patient turnover and the need for rapid, accurate decision-making. While traditional teaching methods have been used to train emergency nurses, the integration of team-based learning into nursing education has not been fully explored in the context of RSUTH.
This study aims to examine the impact of team-based learning on emergency nurses’ clinical decision-making at RSUTH. It will evaluate how TBL influences nurses' ability to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations, improve their communication and teamwork skills, and contribute to better patient outcomes in the emergency department. The findings of this study will provide insights into the potential benefits of TBL as a teaching method for emergency nurses.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Clinical decision-making in emergency nursing is complex and requires both individual skills and effective teamwork. The pressure to make rapid, accurate decisions in high-stress situations can impact the quality of care provided to patients. While traditional education methods focus on individual learning and skill development, there is limited research on the role of team-based learning in enhancing the clinical decision-making abilities of emergency nurses. Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, with its busy emergency department, offers an ideal setting to explore the impact of TBL on clinical decision-making in emergency nursing.
Emergency nurses must collaborate with physicians, medical technologists, and other healthcare professionals in a team-oriented approach to patient care. TBL is a teaching method that fosters collaboration and active engagement, encouraging nurses to work together to solve clinical problems and make decisions. However, there is a lack of research on how TBL influences the clinical decision-making process in emergency nursing practice at RSUTH. This study will explore the effectiveness of TBL in enhancing emergency nurses' clinical decision-making and its potential to improve patient outcomes in the emergency department.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of team-based learning on emergency nurses’ clinical decision-making at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To explore the relationship between teamwork skills and clinical decision-making in emergency nursing.
3. To evaluate the effectiveness of team-based learning in improving patient outcomes in the emergency department.
Research Questions
1. How does team-based learning impact emergency nurses’ clinical decision-making at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What is the relationship between teamwork skills and clinical decision-making in emergency nursing?
3. How does team-based learning affect patient outcomes in the emergency department?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Team-based learning does not significantly improve clinical decision-making among emergency nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between teamwork skills and clinical decision-making in emergency nursing.
3. H₀: Team-based learning does not significantly affect patient outcomes in the emergency department.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on emergency nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and their participation in team-based learning interventions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from nurses and challenges in measuring direct improvements in clinical decision-making.
